Baby Donkey Myka at the Hospital

Avi asks:

Will You Pray With Us?*

Myka, the Baby Donkey needs your prayers!

For the last many months, my family has been very happily anticipating the arrival of a new baby in the family, a baby donkey!

Just a few days ago, she arrived! At first, we were very excited, but then, that excitement turned to concern…

She seemed tired and weak…

Now, this was our “first child” (… at least of the donkey variety…) and we were not 100% certain of what we should expect. But this little girl seemed very weak.

So we called over some friends who were “old hands” with donkeys. They asked us some questions and then rushed over… they were with us in minutes.

A fast inspection, a dozen or so questions and we found that we were legitimately concerned.

It was time to rush our newborn to the hospital.

Calls were made as we settled Myka into the backseat, with her head on Jessica’s lap. (…continued)

Most of my friends and a lot of my clients know that my family and I are “big time” animal lovers. But I have not done a lot of talking about it except in the last couple of months. Lately I have been talking a lot about our work with the Wildlife Waystation, and also, about the farm animals we have on our Malibu property.

I want to keep the focus of this email on Myka. But we have not forgotten about you and your needs. If there is anything that we can help you with in terms of gates, fences, locksmith services, security cameras and lighting, intercoms, or any other home or residential security concerns, please give us a call at Mulholland Security Centers. 1-800-562-5770. Here are the links to our gates gallery, and here is a link to the Mulholland Security Site. You can also reach me directly on my cell at 1-818-266-6930.

We rushed her to the hospital…

We’re still very optimistic as I drive to the hospital and Jessica caresses and coos to Myka in the backseat. I think that there’s something that’s healing in every woman’s touch and in the sound of a woman’s voice – and I think that translates across to all the various species.

She was in the waiting room for just a few minutes…

Remember, we are living in Malibu, and most of the clientele for our vetinarian are dogs and cats, with reptiles, birds and tropical fish way further back in the line-up.

So, there hasn’t been a lot of visits from donkeys at this hospital, all the office personnel were very curious, and the other animals seemed to be asking “What’s she doing here???”

But the doctor’s staff quickly realized that Myka’s situation was urgent and they quickly went into action…

The doctor determines what’s happening and we’re told very upsetting news… but we are given hope, too…

The doctor asks us a LOT of questions and this is what has happened:

Myka was born earlier than we expected – when we woke very early and went to see her mother, we were very surprised to see Myka there!

And, from Myka’s appearance at the time we first saw her, we’ve pretty well determined that the actual birth was about 5 hours prior.

We don’t know why exactly, but it appears that Myka received very little milk, if any, from her mother for all that time. And this is the most crucial period of time for any baby animal to be nurtured and fed.

“She has a 10% chance of survival…”

The Doctor told us that she had only a 10% chance of survival, and that’s very upsetting.

But we look again at this little angel and realize that she’s in God’s hands – and the hands of God’s doctor – our vet. We know all that we can do is pray and ask our friends to do the same.

Will You Pray With Us?

*Several of us at Mulholland are Jewish, and we have several Christians with us as well. And there are several us, too, who say that they are “Spiritual, but not religious.” We respect that.

When we hire here we never are concerned about a person’s religious affiliation – or lack of one.

So, “pray with us” may not “work” for some of our readers, here. If you do believe in the power of prayer, yes, we would very much appreciate your prayers.

Some of the most intelligent, caring and positive people I know have been atheist or agnostic. Should anyone reading this be atheist or agnostic, if you could send a positive flow of mental energy our way, we think that would be helpful.

UPDATE: NOT OUT OF THE WOODS, BUT DEFINITELY GETTING BETTER!

Myka’s been at the HUMPHREY, GIACOPUZZI & ASSOCIATES EQUINE HOSPITAL in Somis, CA. for the last several days. We talked with the doctor last night and he told us that Myka is doing much better. Yesterday, she stood up, and took milk from a bottle. The doctor tells us that her chances of recovery have dramatically improved, and says that she has a 50% likelihood of survival! (That’s up from 10% the day that we brought her in!)

We now ask for your prayers – and positive thoughts – more than ever before.

– More About Our Donkeys –

We’ve got three horses, a pooch, and now, with Myka, our third donkey. All the animals are a pleasure, but the donkeys somehow stand out. One thing that has constantly amazed me is how smart these creatures are!

In both these videos our donkeys got away and got us into some trouble. The first video shows them being apprehended by a Malibu police officer, after they unlatched the gate lock. That’s a pricey ticket!

I thought we had this all under control as I had my crew come and build a better gate and corral. But then one of the workmen did not make sure that he closed the gate behind him, so our get-away donkeys were on the 7:00 news. (second video)

We’ve since handled this by setting up an automatic hydraulic gate closer that firmly returns the gate to a closed position once released.

    Dear Avi,

I am thinking good things about your Myka. I have her in my thoughts. She’s a survivor for sure. She’ll make it with all the love and good energy surrounding her, she’ll be back in no time. She’s a very lucky animal to have you as her keeper.

    Best regards,
